Prices of 512MB RAM chips have come down by at least Rs 500 this month in Mumbai. The ostensible reason is the holiday season in the European countries, which has diverted the RAM hardware to the Indian market.
Dushyant Mehta, distributor of Transcend RAM chips, Mediaman, said, “There’s a downtrend in the DDR market globally. The prices have gone down and are likely to remain so or fall further till the first week of January.”

“The price-fall is due to the closure of the international market at the moment. After the New Year, when fresh buying starts again, the prices might firm up to what it was before,” added Mehta.

An official from Abacus Peripherals, distributors of Hynix products, informed that the inventory of RAM chips had increased before Christmas in the international market. “With the onset of holidays, the surplus has been routed to Indian shores, which has caused the prices to fall.” He also said that the prevailing price in the Mumbai market is rock bottom price and will not fall further. The dealers at Lamington Road, however, are not so sure whether the current price will continue to remain the same after the market opens in January.

According to Nadeem Radiowala, proprietor, Cassette World, the prices started falling from the first week of December, and so far the price has fallen by Rs 500. “Last week itself the prices went down by Rs 100,” he said.

Interestingly, the price has fallen only for 512MB RAMs and not for other capacities. This is being interpreted by a section of the dealers as an indication that the 128 and 256MB RAMs will soon be phased out.

As Gulbir Bhatia, proprietor, Prime ABGB, said, “This is a strategic move by the vendors to promote 512MB over 256MB. As of now, two 256MB RAM chips are more expensive than one 512MB chip. So buyers prefer the latter.”
